This is my final message as Principal of Allenwood Girls' National School. The amalgamation of Allenwood Girls' School and Allenwood Boys' school has finally been given the green light, just a few days before the end of the school year. The school will now be known as Scoil Mhuire, Allenwood and will be considered a new school. Carole Fenton will be the administrative principal of the new school and I will be in a teaching role, though I will be assisting Carole in making the transition to co-education as smooth as possible for the staff and students of the former Girls' School.
It is with great sadness that we will be saying goodbye to Geraldine Rafferty, this June, after 35 years service in Allenwood Girls' School. Her excellent teaching skills have always been applied with patience and gentleness and she has been an exceptional work colleague to all staff who have passed through the school during her time there.
As well as her dedication to teaching Geraldine will be leaving behind a rich legacy of music in Allenwood. She has been preparing choirs for Confirmation, First Communion and First Confession for thirty five years. She has also organised Carol Services, concerts, school bands, Irish culture days, pantomimes, Scór, Fleadh Ceol, and other musical events during her long career. How many of her past pupils remember the whole school community of pupils and teachers walking down the back road to the GAA hall to rehearse for the Pantomimes or various concerts.
Geraldine was also the person behind the Green Schools programme and under her guidance the school has received four green flags. She always had a great love for nature and the environment.
We all wish her the very best on her retirement.
Finally I wish all the children, parents and staff a very enjoyable and safe summer and hope that everyone returns with renewed energy and enthusiasm to begin the new school year on August 30th.
Patricia Keely (Former Principal)
